Tengger People and Kasada Ceremony

Tengger tribes are people who lived in Bromo Mountain and their religion majority is Hindu Mahayana. That’s what makes them different from Hindu in Bali (Hindu Dharma). Other things makes them a little bit different is their burial method. Because Tenggerese lives in Java, so they have affected from Javanese cultures that all dead people must be buried, while in Bali for dead people, they burn them down with ceremony called Ngaben.

Based on the legend, Tengger name came from a leader of a people who lived in Bromo. They are a couple of married but don’t have kids. They are Joko Seger and Roro Anteng. So the name Tengger is abbreviation from their names. Teng is comes from Roro Anteng and Ger comes from Joko Seger. Until today, some people still believed that they are descendant from those couple.

Tengger people somehow have unique characteristics, those are:

  1. Their physic characteristic are have bright brown eyes, with dark skin and somehow similar to Mongolian people despite of their skin color.
  2. They wear normal clothes like Javanese people usually wear, except the wear sarung and it used to replace jacket to ward off cold.
  3. Other than sarung, Tengger people always wear kupluk or mountain hat.
  4. Tengger people have their own language that different from regular Javanese language. They believed it is an old language used duringĀ  Majapahit Era.
  5. Majority Tengger people working as farmer and raising animal. Land nearby Bromo is good for vegetables and it becomes their main objective to grow it, like cabbage, potato, and onion.
  6. Other profession they have are becomes local guide that can take visitor to walk and look around Bromo area as well as rent the horse to take you to the top of Bromo Crater.

People of Bromo have a special ceremony that called Kasada ceremony. The story of Kasada Ceremony also related to the Legend of Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. In the legend said that the couple have been married for long time, but they didn’t have any kids. So they pray in the top of Bromo Mountain. God who resides there heard their prayer and willing to give them child until they have 25 child, but with one condition. The 25th child must be sacrificed. Soon after they have exactly like what their God said. They have 25 child. But promise is just promise. God demand them to remember their promise to sacrifice their last child who was named Raden Dian Kusuma. But they refuse it and try to hide Dian Kusuma somewhere safe so God cannot take him. Coincidentally, Dian Kusuma is their most beloved child. Soon after it, God becomes very angry and Bromo mountain erupted so greatly until it destroy everything. And Dian Kusuma who finally know about the story agree to sacrefice himself. He jumped into the crater and the eruption was stopped. But before jumping, Dian Kusuma give message to all Tenggerese people to follow his footstep by offer something to the God to follow the tradition. Until today, the costum is still exist and called Kasada Ceremony.

This ceremony annually held in 14-15′th day of 10th month based on Javanese Calendar (August-September for global Calendar). They start by praying in the Poten Temple in the middle of the night and start climbing the crater and throw their offerings in the morning. Kasada itself means 10th.

The first time I go to Bromo is when me and my friends do an On the Job Training at one of the Travel Agency. We came from one of Language College called STIBA Malang. There are eleven of us. All with no actual knowledge of being tour guide. Nothing ^^

Here we are:

Top: Jerman, Ferdy, Anggit, Dwi, Galuh, Me, Indri, Bayhaki, Fuad. Bottom: Tia, Mayung, Cita

So we leaving Malang early in the morning, at 1.30 AM. During the trip, almost all of my friends are sleeping, especially someone next to me in the car, quite noisy with his snore hahahaha… But I can’t sleep. I was so excited about the trip that I keep my eyes open. And it’s true, along the way I can see the interesting spots about my city. Like Bentoel Cigarette Factory, the biggest cigarette factory in Malang, Lawang Market, which is open 24/7 and main distribution of fruit and vegetables, then Niagara Hotel, the most haunted hotel in Lawang.

Then we keep moving past Purwodadi, NongkoJajar, and we stop at Wonokitri village to buy entrance ticket into mount Bromo. At that time we are still allowed to go surround mount Bromo by our private vehicle. We keep moving to Penanjakan Mountain passing Simpang Dingklik that have another road. The highest point to see the beautiful panorama of Bromo and surrounding, as well as the process of sunrise.

Bromo views, as well as the process of sunrise

What’s funny is, some of my friends and myself is not used to cold (10 degrees), so we used all of our gear, from hat, maskers, gloves, eyeglasses, triple jackets, so we all looked weird with heavy steps to the podium, hahahahaha. We arrived at 4 AM and wait until sun is completely rising at 5.30 AM, then we go back down to Simpang Dingklik and take the other way down to see the mount Bromo closer via The Sea of Sand.

Here, we stop in front of Hindus temple as parking area. We got two choices to reach the top of Mt. Bromo. First by horse rent from local people cost Rp. 50.000,- one way or Rp. 100.000,- for return trip. The second is walk on foot. We choose to walk on foot because it’s good for exercise, as almost all of us rarely do a sport, hehehe.

250 steps of stairs to reach the top of Mt. Bromo

As we satisfied to view the panorama from the top, we back down to the bottom of stairs and take a lot of pictures, as well as the picture in the beginning of this post. After Bromo we planned to continue our trip to Ijen Plateau…
